Latest research papers released by Microsoft security researchers Cormac Herley and Dinei Florencio reveal the findings, that an increase in spammers and people using phishing attacks for compromising sensitive data has created severe competition and challenging the industry into a less lucrative.
Further the report says “Suppose there were a fixed number of dollars available to be phished each year; that fixed Pool would be divided among more and more people and each phisher’s take would decrease…”
The report : “ A Profitless Endeavor: Phishing as Tragedy of the Commons” estimate the total annual losses associated with phishing much lower than the $3.2 billion estimated by Gartner Inc. and various other research firms.
